New Germany Nature Reserve

On the hills overlooking New Germany and Pinetown lies the tiny New Germany Nature Reserve. Although it is only 110 ha in extent it still has a lot to offer the visitor.

The undulating trails lead you through the grassland with occasional clumps of forest. The reserve is a host to a few species of mammals such as impala, zebra, vervet monkeys and duiker. It also has a substantial variety of bird species. In spring it is a popular place to see wild flowers in bloom.

Another attraction at the reserve is the large walk-in aviary featuring a wide variety of indigenous bird species. There is also a small interpretation centre at the entrance. The reserve is administered by the New Germany Parks Department.

Directions:

Turn left into Otto Volek Road from Old Main Road in Pinetown. After approximately 1 km you turn right at the signpost. Follow the road up the hill to the reserve.

Telephone: 031-7054360
