Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve



Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve, or Stainbank as it is often called, is one of the finest nature reserves in the Durban area. It features a wide variety of habitats including grassland, coastal forest and clumps of bush. A number of mammal species may be easily seen in the reserve including zebra, impala, bushbuck, blue duiker and vervet monkey. It is also a well-liked spot amongst birdwatchers and boasts a checklist of over 200 species.



Among the bird species one might see are Green Coucal, Narina Trogon, Cinnamon Dove, White-eared Barbet, Black Sparrowhawk, African Goshawk, Grey Waxbill, Spotted Thrush, Green Twinspot and many others.

There are various trails in the reserve and maps are available at the entrance gate. Stainbank also has a trail for the handicapped which leads one along a strip of forest where there is a good chance of seeing zebra as well as many species of birds.

There are a number of picnic sites available.

A small entrance fee is payable at the gate.
