Japanese Gardens, Durban

Located in the residential suburb of Durban north are the Japanese Gardens. Here one may walk along paths through the gardens with their many water features, bridges and gazebos. It is a restful place away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The gardens are a popular place for picnics over weekends and family groups gather on the spacious lawns for a picnic or braai.

One of the features of the Japanese Gardens is the variety of bird-life. Many species of birds forage on the dams or lawns or in the trees and bushes. They are quite tame and may be approached to within a few metres. Species that may be seen include Paradise and Black Flycatchers, verious weavers, Moorhen, Dabchick, Egyptian Goose and Kurrichane Thrush. In summer various species of swallow and martin can be skimming over the lawns and water.

Directions to the Japanese Gardens:

The gardens are situated in Durban North fairly near the Hypermarket. Leave Durban on the M4 heading north. Take the off-ramp as soon as you have crossed the Umgeni River bridge. Keep left and then turn right into Prospect Hall Road. Stay on this road until you reach the entrance to the Japanese Gardens on your right. There is a large parking area on site.

There is no entrance fee to the gardens and they are open every day. They are extremely popular on Sundays so get there early to get a parking! The telephone number for more information is 031-563 1333.
