Durban-and-All

The Ultimate Guide to Durban

Welcome to Durban, holiday destination of choice in South Africa. From its beautiful beaches, washed by the warm Indian Ocean, to casinos and shopping malls, Durban has it all!

North Beach, Durban
The Zulu name for Durban is eThekwini and this is the name now given to the greater metropolitan area which includes Durban. The city is the largest city in KwaZulu-Natal and the second biggest city in South Africa, by population, with a population of over 3 million people. Durban has the busiest port in Africa and handles a huge volume of containers. It is also a popular tourist destination with its famous 'Golden Mile' of beaches and hotels being particularly well-known.

The Bluff Lighthouse

The site that was to become Durban was first settled in 1824 by Francis Farewell and some other traders that had accompanied him from the Cape. Shaka, King of the Zulus, ceded the land to the traders. Initially called Port Natal, Durban was founded in 1835. It was named after the governer of the Cape Colony at the time, Sir Benjamin D'Urban. Durban experienced clashes between the British and the Boers around 1840. The population of the area grew steadily and Durban was declared a city in 1935.
