Welcome to Durban, holiday destination of choice in South Africa. From its beautiful beaches, washed by the warm Indian Ocean, to casinos and shopping malls, Durban has it all! ![]() The site that was to become Durban was first settled in 1824 by Francis Farewell and some other traders that had accompanied him from the Cape. Shaka, King of the Zulus, ceded the land to the traders. Initially called Port Natal, Durban was founded in 1835. It was named after the governer of the Cape Colony at the time, Sir Benjamin D'Urban. Durban experienced clashes between the British and the Boers around 1840. The population of the area grew steadily and Durban was declared a city in 1935.
