Dick King's statueDick King was born in England in 1813 and arrived in South Africa when he was 7. In 1828 he started work as a wagon driver in Natal. In 1842 the Afrikaners held the British army under siege in the Congella area of what was to become Durban. The situation was bleak for the British unless they were able to get re-inforcements. It was for this purpose that Dick King set out on his famous ride. Accompanied by his Zulu servant Dick King travelled 960 km through hostile lands, to Grahamstown, in only ten days. About a month later the British army was successfully able to relieve their troops at Congella and King was rewarded with a sum of 15 pounds.![]() |
